Consonant, vowel and lexical neighbourhood processing during word recognition: New evidence using the sandwich priming technique

چکیده
Studies on French adults using a written lexical decision task with masked priming, in which targets were more primed by consonant- (jalu-JOLI) than vowel-related (vobi-JOLI) primes, support the proposal that consonants have weight vowels processing. This study examines phonological and/or nature of this consonant bias (C-bias), sandwich priming brief presentation target (pre-prime) precedes prime-target sequence, manipulation blocking neighbourhood effects. Results from three experiments (varying pre-prime/prime durations) show consistent C-priming and no significant V-priming at earlier later processing stages (50 or 66 ms primes). Yet, joint analysis reveals small V-priming, while confirming advantage. demonstrates contribution level to C-bias. Second, differences performance comparing classic versus also establish inhibition effects

Does consonant–vowel skeletal structure play a role early in lexical processing? Evidence from masked priming
Is the specific consonant–vowel (CV) letter combination of a word a basic source of information for lexical access in the early stages of processing? We designed two masked priming lexical decision experiments to respond to this question bydirectly examining the role ofCVskeletal structure inwrittenword recognition. To that aim, each target word was preceded by a one-letter different nonword pr...

Does letter position coding depend on consonant/vowel status? Evidence with the masked priming technique.
Recently, a number of input coding schemes (e.g., SOLAR model, SERIOL model, open-bigram model, overlap model) have been proposed that capture the transposed-letter priming effect (i.e., faster response times for jugde-JUDGE than for jupte-JUDGE). In their current version, these coding schemes do not assume any processing differences between vowels and consonants. However, in a lexical decision...
متن کاملA consonant/vowel asymmetry in word-for processing: evidence in childhood and in adulthood.
In the literature, consonants have been proposed to be more important than vowels in lexical activation and access processes. However, despite a large body of evidence in the infant and adult literature, a recent study revealed a disappearance of the bias in newly learned words over the preschool years (Havy, Bertoncini, & Nazzi, 2011). As a first explanation of this developmental change, one m...
